Our team at Bramalea Chiropractic Walk In and Physiotherapy Clinic would like to announce that we have started a Pelvic Health program.

Our physiotherapist, Parul Chauhan, has successfully completed training (level I, II, IIIa) in Pelvic Floor Rehabilitation. The training included the treatment of urinary incontinence, prolapse and pelvic pain. We are currently only offering services to female clients.

Why Choose A Pelvic Floor Physiotherapist?

Pelvic floor physiotherapy is a specialized type of physiotherapy that is geared towards providing exercises, education, treatment and lifestyle advice that will ultimately improve the function of your pelvic floor. This specialized physiotherapy is becoming more established as the first line of defence against incontinence, retention, pelvic pain and more.

Kegels are not always indicated for pelvic floor problems. In some cases, Kegels can do more harm than good, and often Kegels are not performed correctly. The Cochrane Collaboration 2010 concluded that Physiotherapists with specialized training in pelvic floor rehabilitation, which involves using an internal examination to correctly teach Kegel exercises, should be the first line of defence before a surgical consultation for stress, urge and mixed incontinence in women.

While everyone can benefit from pelvic floor physiotherapy, here a few examples of times when symptoms become more predominant:

  • Pregnant Women

  • Postpartum Women

  • Post Menopause

  • Post Surgery

Common Causes of Pelvic Floor Dysfunction

Hypotonicity

Weak pelvic floor muscles can contribute to stress, incontinence and pelvic organ prolapse. Often these muscles can be weakened by pregnancy, constipation, persistent heavy lifting, ageing and obesity.

Hypertonicity

Tight pelvic floor muscles mean that your pelvic floor muscles have a limited ability to stretch and relax. This can contribute to urinary urgency, incontinence and chronic pelvic pain. Hypertonicity can also contribute to Dyspareunia, Interstitial Cystitis, Pudendal Neuralgia, Vaginismus, and Vulvodynia.
